Norton, MA — One of the shining stars at MGA Links at Mamantapett - the MGA-owned course located in Norton - will soon take his game to the national stage.
Trevor Bernier, a 16 year old from Taunton who participates in The First Tee of Massachusetts programming at MGA Links, was awarded one of four Pepsi Little People's/The First Tee of Great River scholarships. The scholarship includes complimentary entry fees and travel to and from the 2009 Pepsi Little People's Golf Championships, which will be contested on June 22-24 at five golf courses in the Quincy, IL, area.
"We are thrilled to have Trevor represent The First Tee of Massachusetts at the Pepsi Little People's Golf Championships," said Joe McCabe, executive director of The First Tee of Massachusetts. "Trevor has embraced The First Tee program and is a role model for the younger participants. We know that he will be a great representative for our program."
This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Pepsi Little People's Golf Championships, which is the third largest international junior golf tournament in the world.
Bernier will surely make his mark in Illinois as he is a talented golfer who is an All-Scholastic second team member for golf at Bristol-Plymouth High School. His younger sister, Cora, is also a member at MGA Links and last summer was one of eight The First Tee of Massachusetts participants to compete in the Barclays Tri-Match at The Country Club in Brookline. Back in the summer of 2007, Trevor played for Team Massachusetts at the inaugural Barclays Tri-Match held at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey.
Trevor plans to take all of the things he has learned in The First Tee program and help as many people as possible understand the importance of life and golf skills.
"I will not limit myself to the local Chapter, but also spread my knowledge of the game, and my life skills to students at my high school," said Bernier.
Applications for the PLP/TFTGR Scholarships were received from 14 boys and girls from Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois.
"This was a very difficult decision," says Nan Ryan, executive director of Pepsi Little People's and Chair of the Scholarship Committee. "Each of the applicants expressed how much their The First Tee experiences have meant to them in golf and in life. We hope that their first Little People's adventure will be a most rewarding experience for them as well."
